Shirvan Sirvan Kilim
Shirvan Sirvan Kilim
Silvan kilims are woven by farmers of the Silvan Plains in central Azerbaijan.
This region is a mountainous area nestled between the Caspian and Black Seas, known as the Caucasus.
Isolated in these highlands, traditional weaving practices have been carefully preserved. While carpets are common to this area, kilims are remarkably rare, yet those that are produced command the highest regard worldwide.
Due to their scarcity, these kilims are exceptionally precious. Large-scale pieces with bold, striking designs such as this are characteristic of the region.
The kilims of this area possess such distinctly recognizable qualities that they could once be identified by their patterns alone based on their origin.
Silvan kilims in particular often feature horizontal striped patterns without traditional borders, as seen here.
What makes them truly remarkable is the stunning beauty of their deep color palettes and the striking contrast between these rich hues and the white of the cotton.
Purples range from madder to wine and deep violet; blues shift from navy to blue-green to lavender to deep indigo.
These are combined with oranges, pinks, browns, and whites in countless compositions, carefully arranged across the piece.
The precise, substantial weave speaks to exceptional craftsmanship and skill. These are kilims that have been meticulously preserved and woven with great care and intention.
