This striking antique Chuval showcases bold three-dimensional texture and beautifully composed geometric patterns.
The Chuval was historically a practical bag used by nomadic peoples to transport grain and household goods during migrations. As a symbol of wealth, these pieces were adorned with stunning decorations and rendered in eye-catching colors visible from great distances. This particular Chuval, though originally created for such utilitarian purposes, bears ornamental details far too beautiful for mere function.
Woven with exceptionally fine yarns in a dense, intricate weave that produces a refined, tightly-packed surface. Each decorative detail—from the jijim embellishments to the overall composition—has been executed with meticulous care, creating an orderly and beautiful visual rhythm.
Against a dark charcoal ground, vibrant red and golden yellow yarns create striking contrast and dimensional depth within the pattern. The yellow carries the subtle, muted luster of brass or aged copper.
Nearly square in proportion and compact in scale, this kilim commands a commanding presence.
