Old Kilim
Old Kilim
An antique kilim from Manastir in Central Anatolia.
At first glance, this piece presents a completely different impression from other Central Anatolian kilims in both color and design. Manastir kilims have been woven by Muslim peoples who migrated from the Balkan Peninsula. This region, where diverse populations settled and Eastern and Western cultures intermingled, created distinctive color palettes and patterns that profoundly influenced Manastir kilim production. These kilims share characteristics more commonly associated with Sarkoy kilims and other textiles from the European Turkish side of the region.
This kilim exemplifies those qualities through its densely woven structure created with tightly twisted, fine yarns, as well as its striking color combination of deep blue, bright red, and white. Yet beyond these technical features, the simple and bold design is brimming with originality, displaying a lively and distinctly individual character.
While the pattern and contrast are striking, upon closer inspection the subtle slits between colors and the gracefully faded, naturally aged dyes create a harmonious balance that resolves into an exceptionally versatile and wearable palette.
