An old chuval from Malatya (Malatya), located in southeastern Anatolia, hailing from one of Turkey's finest kilim-weaving regions, renowned for both quality and quantity.
Chuvals were originally functional storage bags used for grains, textiles, and household goods, fashioned as drawstring pouches. These pieces are typically woven with exceptional durability, and often feature symmetrical patterns created using the jijim technique. Across generations, they served as indispensable tools for nomadic life while simultaneously adorning tent interiors as decorative elements. Their practical strength is beautifully reflected in both the weaving and color palette.
While chuvals are often distinctly masculine in character, this rare example showcases notably feminine sensibilities in its color and weave. The muted, layered pink is exceptionally soft, and while the weave is not overly rigid, the densely packed knots create a supple yet durable fabric. Even the simple horizontal stripe pattern features delicate embellishments and thoughtful detailing—a distinctly feminine touch throughout.
The jijim weaving displays a rich, warm yellow with orange undertones reminiscent of mandarin fruit, while the green is rendered in calm, refined, and subtle tones.
