The source of the rug comes from the book Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, pg.247. This is a Harshang design rug with palmettes from the early 19th century, Kuba region, Caucasus area. This is a stylized version of the Caucasian 'split-palmettes' and flame-like palmettes rugs, all having a Kufic main border flanked by guards containing small star-like floral motifs. Although, the abundance of floral composition, combs, small animals, and bird figures scattered throughout the field, it is interesting to note that the motifs in each medallion formed by the sharp indentations in the medallions' outlines are less 'swan-like' on this rug with a white ground. The design of the rug is interpreted by our designers, and the most appropriate colors to match the original is used for this rug.
