The source of the rug comes from the book Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, pg.247. This is a Harshang design rug with palmettes from the early 19th century, Kuba region, Caucasus area. This is a stylized interpreted version of the Caucasian 'split-palmettes' and flame-like palmettes rugs, all having a Kufic main border flanked by guards containing small star-like floral motifs. Although, the abundance of floral composition, and small animal figures scattered throughout the field, it is interesting to note that the motifs in each medallion are formed by the sharp indentations. It is framed with a series of borders, the main of which is the “leaf and calyx”. The design of the rug is interpreted by our designers, and soft colors are chosen for this rug.
