An antique kilim from Quba, a city in Azerbaijan in the Caucasus region.
This piece is distinguished by its vibrant color palette, created using strong natural dyes. Despite its age, the colors remain exceptionally vivid and the contrasts are beautifully defined.
The patterns possess remarkable originality and unique design sensibility. Woven throughout are arrow motifs, animals, and floral elements. The patterns depicted within the green field, framed by zigzag borders in the center, are truly distinctive—they possess an almost otherworldly quality, like messages inscribed by an alien hand.
But that's not all that makes this kilim exceptional. Woven into the lower portion are characters and numerals indicating the date.
The strong contrast between deep black and earthy terracotta tones makes the various other colors—which are in fact natural dyes with subtle, restrained individual hues—appear strikingly luminous and bright.
This is perhaps a kilim that, much like a Picasso painting, overflows with artistic individuality.
