This is an antique kilim from Kars, a town in eastern Anatolia near the border with the Caucasus region. Due to its proximity to the border, this area has long been marked by continuous conflict and invasions by various powers.
Kilims from this region are said to be heavily influenced by Caucasian design traditions.
Since the 1950s, Kars has been known for producing these distinctive long, narrow kilims, which have become a characteristic of the region. The use of modest color palettes—such as browns and muted pinks—represents a common pattern of the area.
This kilim exemplifies this aesthetic, with subdued contrasts and a reassuring, harmonious color composition.
The geometric medallions within the bold motifs feature charming details such as dots and angular patterns, while the field contains various ornamental elements and what appear to be date markings, adding to its character.
The calm, sophisticated color tones make this piece naturally compatible with Japanese interiors.
