The source of the rug comes from the book Tapis du Caucase - Rugs of the Caucasus, Ian Bennett & Aziz Bassoul, The Nicholas Sursock Museum, Beirut, Lebanon 2003, nr.42 and Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, nr.171-172 and Caucasian Carpets, E. Gans-Reudin, Thames and Hudson, Switzerland 1986, pg.144. This is a diagonal stripe rug from the late 19th century, Genje ( Gendje, was called Elizabethpol under the Tzars and is now known as Kirovabad, the principal town of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaydzhanskaya (Soviet Azerbaijan) region, Caucasus area. The color range and motifs of this rug are similar to those on Shahsavan tribal rugs from Moghan. A typical Gendje rug with contrasting stripes containing 'S' motifs with a leaf-and-calyx border. The design of this rug is interpreted by our designers and the most appropriate colors to match the original are used for this rug.
