An antique kilim from Malatya, a renowned weaving center in eastern Anatolia.
This is one half of a large kilim that was originally woven in two sections from the center. A richly colored piece centered around an impressive medallion.
The striking beauty of the red field—which now occupies the center as a result of the kilim being divided in half—immediately captures the eye.
The medallion and the motifs scattered throughout the field display vibrant contrast with navy, white, black, and yellow tones.
Additional hues including moss green, gray, and deep burgundy are woven abundantly throughout. The many colors are finely separated in the weaving, creating an impression reminiscent of a decorative brocade band. The subtle variations in dye visible across each color offer an almost painterly quality, making this a truly rewarding piece to appreciate.
