Eastern Anatolia Malatya Old Kilim
Eastern Anatolia Malatya Old Kilim
An antique kilim from Malatya, one of the primary weaving centers for kilims in Eastern Anatolia. The region is known for its abundant production and remarkable variety of kilim designs.
This particular piece showcases an exceptionally distinctive color palette. Though composed entirely of deeper tones, it possesses a captivating, unexpectedly vibrant quality.
The kilim features alternating horizontal stripes in purple and brown, blue and brown, and moss green and brown in flat-woven sections, adorned bands with ochre and red accents, and decorative jijim bands with interconnected medallion-like motifs. While each color remains relatively restrained, the magic of their juxtaposition and interplay creates this strikingly individual and colorful appearance.
For instance, where the brown horizontal stripes meet, subtle red weft threads are carefully woven in, creating striking contrast with the adjacent purple, blue, and moss green sections.
The ochre band—that yellowish tone—sits naturally alongside the moss green, yet it is intentionally placed within the purple and blue sections, colors that contrast beautifully with yellow.
The bold patterned jijim bands are composed of colors like red, blue, yellow, and white that possess inherent vibrancy and clarity. The weaver's color coordination is truly remarkable.
While the color combination might initially seem incongruous, the overall balance is surprisingly harmonious, creating a piece of mysterious and captivating appeal.
