This is an antique kilim from the Moldova region. Today a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania and Ukraine, Moldova has a rich historical significance as a crossroads between Asia and Europe. Though now an independent nation, it has been ruled by various powers throughout history. Since the Middle Ages, the region experienced repeated occupation and annexation by Turkey, Russia, and Romania, and fell under Ottoman Empire control in the 16th century.
The Moldova region maintains a strong kilim weaving tradition, producing kilims with distinctive character.
The designs are notably figurative, with a distinctly European aesthetic.
The color palette typically features deep, rich tones—such as heavy black—as the foundation, contrasted with vibrant bouquet-like floral designs that are arranged and woven in various patterns throughout.
The color usage and motifs resemble European embroidery designs occasionally seen in the continent's decorative arts.
Yet the flat-woven sections display characteristic abrash, maintaining the essential nature of kilim craftsmanship. Though it conveys an impression of a carpet, its kilim construction offers versatile applications and ease of use. Its substantial presence makes it particularly well-suited for formal living rooms or dining areas in Western interiors.
