Akstafa Kazak Rug

The design source of the rug comes from the book Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, pg.176 and Tapis du Caucase – Rugs of the Caucasus, Ian Bennett & Aziz Bassoul, The Nicholas Sursock Museum, Beirut, Lebanon 2003, nr.43. This rug is from the late 19th century, Kazak region, Caucasus area. The name “Akstafa” is commonly given to a group of long rugs with characteristic design features of large fan-tailed birds, probably peacocks arranged down the length of the field above and below large stellar medallions. Although Akstafa is the name of a village in the Kazak weaving area, most examples of this design type have wool warps and cotton wefts, a structure not usually encountered on rugs attributed to the Kazak region, which have all-wool foundations. Unfortunately, there seem to be few dated examples that might aid us. One, illustrated in Albert Achdjian’s The Rug, is dated 1334AH (1915-16), and has the typical look of an early 20th-century version of a traditional design; apparently, it also has an all-wool foundation. What little emerges from these facts suggests that this design was not confined to one small area. This example, which was probably made during the first quarter of the 20th century, has elements somewhat stiffly “drawn” compared to older versions, but the birds are still clearly recognizable. Note that the pairs of quartered squares, although found in early examples of this design group, can also be seen on several other design groups of rugs made in Shirvan, particularly in the Baku area. The design of this rug is interpreted by our designers and the most appropriate colors to match the original are used for this rug.

Turkish Court Manufactury Rugs were woven in the E

Turkish Court Manufactury Rugs were woven in the Egyptian workshops founded by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. Those carpets were woven in Egypt, following the paper cartoons probably created in Istanbul and sent to Cairo at that time.

Carnations, tulips, hyacinths, lilies, peonies, and other flowers, together with gracefully sweeping lancet leaves, sumptuous palmettes, and delicate sprays of blossoms, constitute the rich flora of these carpets, whose borders charm the eye with their elegant solutions for the corner problem, while in the guard stripes almost invariably little rosette-flowers appear all in a row. It is merely by way of exception that we will still find appropriations levied upon the Mamluk tradition, while, on the other hand, the coming revolution in decor is already heralded in a few specimens which we still count as belonging to the earlier group. In pure folk art, such a radical overturn would be quite inconceivable, but then in the operation of a manufactory, the introduction of a completely novel program can be accomplished with a minimum of confusion. With this change of orientation, it was significant that the idea of a governing medallion, even if with a different conception, had already been put to use.

Kerman Vase-Technique Carpet

The design source of the carpet comes from the book How to Read – Islamic Carpets, Walter B. Denny, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 2014 fig.18. This is a vase-technique with a stellate central medallion carpet design 17th century from Kerman region, Persia. The design of the carpet shows a vigorous central eight-pointed star medallion; quarters of the same medallion in the four corners of the field and ornamented with floral forms contrasting with a dark border. In the field, a rich assortment of decorative but naturalistic flowers, campanula, narcissus poeticus, iris, willow shrub, rose, calendula, carnation, aster, lily, and fruit blossoms, is arranged a small but vigorous central eight-pointed star medallion ornamented with energetic interlacing arabesques and numerous small tchi forms. The border is filled with rosettes, blossoms and leaves, and a few tchi forms. The most appropriate colors to match the original are used for this rug.

The design source of the rug comes from the book Antique Rugs of Kurdistan A Historical Legacy of Woven Art, James D. Burns, 2002 nr.28. This was an exclusive example of offset rows of flowers designed 18th-century rug from Senna, Eastern Kurdistan area. This example is special because the flowers are well scaled about the full pattern and beautifully colored also floral repeat is particularly associated with rugs from East Kurdistan, and this is the earliest Senna weaving illustrated here with an indigenous border pattern. The design of this rug is interpreted by our designers and the most appropriate colors to match the original are used for this rug.

Book: Antique Rugs of Kurdistan: A Historical Legacy of Woven Art by James D. Burns

Author James D. Burns, with over four decades of collecting rugs and textiles from the Near and Far East, has amassed a wealth of expertise. Following his earlier work, “Traditions in Weaving: The Caucasus,” published in 1987, which showcased his collection of Caucasian rugs, Burns now draws from his own treasury of Kurdish weavings. He combines these cherished pieces with carefully selected masterworks from European and American public and private collections, curating a remarkable compilation of the finest and most exquisite examples. James Burns holds degrees in History and Political Science from Whitman College, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Washington, practicing as a trial lawyer in Seattle.

This book and the James D. Burns collection became a source of inspiration for the designs of our Kurdish rugs.

Oversized Mamluk Rug

The design of the rugs is unique to the Mamluk world, consisting of a square that is transformed into a rectangle by the addition of two oblong panels. This rectangular component is either single and framed by a wide border or triple, in which case the central square is more prominent and all three units are enclosed by a border. The only exception is the celebrated five-partite rug owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The decoration of the central square utilizes geometric units radiating from the center. The core is often a multipetaled rosette enclosed by a star, which is in turn placed within a medallion. The encircling zones grow larger as they open out from the core, forming a series of stars, hexagons, octagons, and polygons, each subdivided and decorated in contrasting colors with alternating motifs.

The overall kaleidoscopic effect is similar to the astral compositions of manuscript illumination, woodwork, and inlaid stone. The oblong panels flanking the central square are either tripartite, their components echoing the central design, or contain rows of stylized cypresses, palm trees, papyrus sprays, abstracted florals, and arabesques.

The border often consists of medallions alternating with oval cartouches; some later examples have overall floral patterns in the borders.

It is essential that the threads are sufficiently stretched, that they do not deteriorate during weaving, and that the processes are carried out using the right material. We would like to give you a simple example; to start the production of a 45-square-meter carpet, you need to prepare the loom and complete the warping loom processes. Unbelievable, but for this warping a looming process, you need to use about 55 kilometers of rope and complete them in a certain order without any errors.
