Mina Khani Rug

The design source of the rug comes from the book Antique Rugs of Kurdistan A Historical Legacy of Woven Art, James D. Burns, 2002 nr.2. This was an exclusive example of a Mina Khani lattice design mid-19th century rug from Koliya'i, Southern Kurdistan area. The mina khani is composed of a series of rows of aster flowers surrounded by circular tendrils, vines, and other flowers; it's used in many areas of southern and eastern Kurdistan and is among the most popular of all Kurdish patterns. The lattice appears to continue into infinity - as though we can see the section that is framed by the border. The design of this rug is interpreted by our designers and soft colors are chosen for this rug.

Palmettes and Flowers Lattice Rug

This offset pattern is composed of palmettes and flowers, one has the impression that it is only part of a larger scheme designed 19th-century rug from Bidjar region, Eastern Kurdistan area. Very similar palmettes, drawn in a curvilinear manner and combined with identical forked leaves, can be seen on a few examples of workshop carpets made from the late seventeenth century onward in Herat in Khurasan province, east Persia, and the same pattern known as Harshang design was used in the Caucasus in the eighteenth century, as well. The design employs floral, richly complex repeating arrays of brilliant color palmettes and flowers that mark it as a lineal descendant of the great vase-technique carpets of the seventeenth century.
Kurdistan has not usually been given its due as a region that has produced rugs of considerable excellence of design and rich brilliant colors, probably from early times on, well into the 19th century. Technically they range from the solid, heavy, double-warped Bijars of the 19th century to the flexible rug of this type, and the Kilims, or flat-woven rugs of great delicacy. The design displayed in this example, clearly derived from a 17th-century model, proved so popular that it spread not only to Eastern Persia but to the Caucasus as well. It continues well into the 18th century and can still be found in Caucasian rugs of the 19th century. The design of this rug is based on an alternating succession of two large lateral palmettes surrounded by small palmette blossoms, a complex palmette arrangement composed of a central round floral medallion, four large palmette forms of two different designs facing this rosette, and four diamond-shaped cartouches, filled with rosettes, on the diagonal axis.

The Simonetti Mamluk Carpet

The source of carpet comes from the book How to Read – Islamic Carpets, Walter B. Denny, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 2014 fig.61,62. The five-star-medallion carpet was designed in the early 16th century by Mamluk Sultane of Cairo, Egypt. It is exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York as The ‘Simonetti’ Carpet. The conventional practice of naming Islamic carpets either after the place they were found (“Niğde Carpet”) or after a previous owner (“Anhalt Carpet”) in this case memorializes the former Italian owner of this magnificent example of fifteenth-century Cairene weaving under the Burji Mamluk dynasty (1382–1517). The Simonetti Carpet is commonly called a “five-color Mamluk carpet” because of its color palette. The materials (most notably S-spun, or clockwise-spun, wool), dyestuffs (a limited range of colors including a purple-red made from the lac insect), and distinctive repertoire of geometric designs are all characteristic of Mamluk carpets from the period. The width, about ninety-four inches (239 cm), is typical for contemporaneous carpets woven in Cairo. A roller-bar loom was used to make the carpet: the unwoven warps were unwound from a rotating cylindrical wood roller at the top of the loom, and the finished carpet was then wound up around a similar roller at the bottom. This method allowed the same loom to be employed to weave both very long and relatively short carpets of the same width. The Simonetti displays three of the geometric medallion designs usually seen in short Mamluk carpets (two of them repeated, combined in A-B-C-B-A sequence) in one very long, impressive work of art.

Akstafa Kazak Rug

The design source of the rug comes from the book Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, pg.176 and Tapis du Caucase – Rugs of the Caucasus, Ian Bennett & Aziz Bassoul, The Nicholas Sursock Museum, Beirut, Lebanon 2003, nr.43. This rug is from the late 19th century, Kazak region, Caucasus area. The name “Akstafa” is commonly given to a group of long rugs with characteristic design features of large fan-tailed birds, probably peacocks arranged down the length of the field above and below large stellar medallions. Although Akstafa is the name of a village in the Kazak weaving area, most examples of this design type have wool warps and cotton wefts, a structure not usually encountered on rugs attributed to the Kazak region, which have all-wool foundations. Unfortunately, there seem to be few dated examples that might aid us. One, illustrated in Albert Achdjian’s The Rug, is dated 1334AH (1915-16), and has the typical look of an early 20th-century version of a traditional design; apparently, it also has an all-wool foundation. What little emerges from these facts suggests that this design was not confined to one small area. This example, which was probably made during the first quarter of the 20th century, has elements somewhat stiffly “drawn” compared to older versions, but the birds are still clearly recognizable. Note that the pairs of quartered squares, although found in early examples of this design group, can also be seen on several other design groups of rugs made in Shirvan, particularly in the Baku area. The design of this rug is interpreted by our designers and the most appropriate colors to match the original are used for this rug.

Turkish Court Manufactury Rugs were woven in the E

Turkish Court Manufactury Rugs were woven in the Egyptian workshops founded by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. Those carpets were woven in Egypt, following the paper cartoons probably created in Istanbul and sent to Cairo at that time.

Carnations, tulips, hyacinths, lilies, peonies, and other flowers, together with gracefully sweeping lancet leaves, sumptuous palmettes, and delicate sprays of blossoms, constitute the rich flora of these carpets, whose borders charm the eye with their elegant solutions for the corner problem, while in the guard stripes almost invariably little rosette-flowers appear all in a row. It is merely by way of exception that we will still find appropriations levied upon the Mamluk tradition, while, on the other hand, the coming revolution in decor is already heralded in a few specimens which we still count as belonging to the earlier group. In pure folk art, such a radical overturn would be quite inconceivable, but then in the operation of a manufactory, the introduction of a completely novel program can be accomplished with a minimum of confusion. With this change of orientation, it was significant that the idea of a governing medallion, even if with a different conception, had already been put to use.
